Dress for the Trip

Pack a change of clothes & medicines in your carry-on   If your trip is during the time of graduation, everyone needs to bring something nice for the graduation services.

Men

– Short Sleeves is best such as, golf shirts and t-shirts for
visiting villages. You might want a dress shirt for the church services.

Preachers bring a tie and dress shirt for preaching and clothes/shoes (such as flipflops) for baptizing.

Casual Pants/Long Shorts is best
such as, something like Dockers, khaki pants or blue jeans to visit the villages
during the day and casual pants or dress pants for the church services.

Bring good Walking Shoes and a
Cap ...We may do a great deal of walking so take something that will be
comfortable. You may want a pair of "dress shoes" to wear to the
services and graduations.

Also, take a light jacket for the
cool nights. "The guys" like to play basketball at night.

If you would like to play basketball, you may
take a pair of shorts, like basketball shorts, and a t-shirt to play ball in.

Women

– Skirts/Blouses/Dresses is best for church services.

For Day to Day, some girls/ladies
like to wear a long shirt over leggings or capris. It will be very hot in the
villages so you will want to wear something loose and cool. Sleeveless dresses
are OK but please,

NO string TANKTOPS.   Please NO “short” shorts.

You can wear long shorts, pants or capris
while traveling down and back, when giving out clothes & food bags – IF WE
ARE NOT in church services, and during your free time.

Bring good Walking Shoes ... Also
take a light jacket or sweater for the cool nights.

In San Marcos, we do not have the
convenience of the showers being in all the rooms, so if you prefer getting
dressed when you get back to your room, you will also need to take a bathrobe
or sweatpants and a t-shirt. Since there is always a mixed group of males and
females and we have a night watchman,

Ladies,

PLEASE DO NOT bring short gowns or pajamas

for lounging in the courtyard or on the balcony.

  DRESS MODESTLY!!!

FOOD AND OTHER ACCESSORIES

Snacks

– Take all the snacks
you want. You will be provided with 3 meals a day (mostly southern cooking)
except on the days we are not able to return to San Marcos for lunch. You will
need snacks on those days. We have very good cooks so don’t plan on losing weight
while you are gone! If you are a very picky eater, you may want to take some
canned meats to make sandwiches, crackers, snack cakes, etc.

Do not forget your charges for phones, computers, iPads, extra batteries, etc.

Medicine

- Take any medicines that you need but

BE SURE to carry this in your carry-on or pocketbook

.

You can take a pain-reliever, Imodium AD
tablets, Pepto-Bismol (tablets are the best), Dramamine etc.

These meds should be in the original containers.

Keep insulin and needles together while traveling (with prescription clearly visible on the insulin).

Anti-bacterial wipes -

Some of the roads are dirt and the trips to and from the villages are very dusty.

You will want to wipe your hands after leaving a village and before eating.

Insulated water bottles are good to carry with you to the villages.

The mission center has bottled water available.
We usually stop at a gas station where you can purchase soft drinks, bottled water, and snack items.

Insect repellent -

Occasionally flies and ants are a problem. Bites can sting and itch a little.

  Sunscreen

- You may want to take a
small bottle of sunscreen; especially for the days we give out food bags door to door.

Candy

– Many groups like to take candy for the children.

(If you are concerned about the weight of your luggage, we have candy available

for purchase in our mission store at the mission center.)

It is best to give the candy inside the church while the children are sitting down so we can maintain order.

It’s good to buy the snack size bags and make up little bags of 4-5 pieces of candy.

Some visitors include a small toy in the bag.

(You can sometimes buy candy at a very good price after a holiday.)

There will be from 75 – 300 children in each village so we are talking about seeing in excess of 3000 children during the week.

There will be time in the evenings for the group to work together making up individual candy bags so it would be fine to bring the bulk bags and snack bags for packaging.

Clothing

– Honduras and Nicaragua are very poor countries. It is not unusual to see a child wearing
very little or no clothing. Many people like to take clothes for the children.
You can go to yard sales and buy nice children's clothes for very little. A
book bag is a very easy and convenient way to carry candy, clothes, snacks and
other things to the villages. If you use a book bag as a carry-on, you can
empty it when we arrive in Honduras and then carry it each day.

LUGGAGE

Please verify this information a couple of days before you leave

- the information is changing weekly!!

The weight limit is 50 lbs per check-in piece. -

The first piece of check-in luggage cost $35 to $40. The second bag can costs from
$40 to $100 (depending on Airline).

We suggest a limit of 48 lbs. to allow for the difference in the scales.

You are also allowed 1 carry-on piece of luggage.

Make sure your carry-on is not too large or you will have to check it.

Backpacks/purses are not counted as a carry-on so you can carry that as
well as a carry-on. Consider the carry‑on luggage with wheels and the handle which pulls out,

it comes in different sizes so be sure you do not get one too large for the overhead bin on the plane.

The measurements are not to exceed 8x15x22 and can not weigh more than 45 pounds.
There is always the chance that this will have to be checked so it is best to be sure your name is on everything.

Carry-On Luggage ...

Please limit liquids – toothpaste, shampoo, hair gel, etc. to 3 oz. and place inside a quart size zip lock bag

if you are taking them in your purse or carry-on bag.

- A gym bag, backpack or roller
"carry-on" luggage works best. The bag will need to fit in the overhead
compartment or under the airplane seat.

There is more information on this in How to Pack.

- Please keep your passport,
money, credit cards, checkbook, and a photo ID with you and not in your luggage.

- Make-up can be put into a make-up bag, but
the liquids need to be included in your quart size zip lock baggie. Try and fit
a small purse inside your carry on or video case. The less you have to deal
with, the better

.
- Please, pack a change of clothes in your carry-on luggage.

There is always a possibility that your luggage will not arrive the same time you do.

Check In Luggage ...

The airlines charge $35-$40 for the 1st piece/$40-$65 for the 2nd

piece of check-in luggage weighing up to 50 lbs.

For those travelers flying out of Atlanta, we may ask you to take an extra
piece of luggage for us because many times, we need to take Bibles and other
things to Honduras for the mission's use. Of course, we will pay for the extra
piece of luggage. From experience, we have learned the best bags to use are duffle bags or suitcases.

DO NOT use the plastic storage containers or footlockers If the plane is full, these are
the items that are going to be left on the dock.

HOW TO PACK

If you are going to Honduras with friends or family members, you do not need to take 2 of everything.

You can share and it saves room in your luggage. Your toiletries can be left in the
bathroom every day rather than taking them back and forth to your room. Only
our group will be using these facilities so no one will bother them. Be sure
you put tape on anything that has a flip or screw type cap, such as shampoo and
conditioner and put it in a zip-lock bag, if the cap comes open it will not get
on everything else.

If you fold your clothes in half
and roll them up, you can pack much more in a bag. You will be able to hang up your
clothes when we get to Honduras to let the wrinkles fall out or take a small
travel iron in your check-in luggage.

- Please keep your passport, money, credit cards, checkbook, and a photo ID with you and not in your luggage.

- Make-up can be put into a make-up bag, but
the liquids need to be included in your quart size zip lock baggie. Try and fit
a small purse inside your carry on or video case. The less you have to deal with, the better

.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

Credit Card -

Call your credit card company and let them know you
will be traveling in Honduras and Nicaragua during this time so they will not
reject a charge because it is out of the ordinary for you.

Spending Money

– If possible, we can exchange your money when you
arrive and at the end of your trip, we will change it back into American dollars.

It is hard for me to say how much spending money to take as I do not know your spending habits.

The only money you “need” is for drinks and snacks. Souvenirs can be purchased at the
mission center and the airport for reasonable prices. If you are concerned
about not taking enough money, we can process a credit/debit charge for you.

Checks cannot be used for purchases while in Honduras.

Food Bags for Sponsored Opportunity Children/Pastors -

You may want
to give your child and/or pastor’s family a $25.00, $35.00, or $50.00 food bag
while you are there. This is such a blessing for the family. Please give me the
name and number of the child and size of food bag

at least 3 weeks before your trip so they can be ready when you get there. Food bags may be
ordered during the week but please allow time to make them.

Small Food Bags to Be Given Door To Door - We began this project after Hurricane Mitch and it was such a blessing to both the givers and the receivers. This is also a way that your church, Sunday school or co-workers, family and friends can become involved with your trip. The $10.00 food bags will be given out door-to-door or in the churches. The needs are great in every village, and this is a wonderful way to witness. If you are interested, don’t delay with this project. We need to receive the funds in our Villa Rica office at least two weeks before the trip so that there is time to get the bags ready. A gospel track (when available) is included in each food bag.

Tips for Our Servers

We will have two to three cooks who come in early and leave late each day in order
to prepare our meals; one man will be hauling water continuously from Comali
(this is every drop of water we use); our bus driver and his helper; several
translators; and the people in the mission store (they work late hours to have
the store open for us to buy things for our children or to buy drinks and
snacks). We ask that the visitors give as the Lord leads and at the end of the
week what ever is received is divided between these people. You can give this
to your group leader or the mission at any time during the week. Some groups prefer
to send the tip money to the Villa Rica office with their trip payments and we
forward the money to Honduras for them.

Things Needed - There are some food items we can not buy in Honduras that are used to prepare your meals. Closer to the departure date you will be asked to bring one of the items.

Please "DO" List

If you do not have a passport, you need to apply soon!! It usually takes an average of 6 weeks to 2 months for them to be processed and be mailed back to you. Make sure your passport is signed.   VERY IMPORTANT – Because of Homeland Security, it is now the policy in Honduras that at the time of your departure, your passport must have at least 6 months before it expires. If the date is within the six-month period, you may not be allowed to board.   Keep up with your passport. If it is lost, you will have to obtain a new one before you can leave the country, and this entails getting a certified copy of your birth certificate just like the first time. So, please do not lose it!!   Nametag and our mission t-shirt should be worn at all times during airport traveling…the airport staffs recognize our shirts.   Dress modestly! Women: pants/capris/shorts to the knees or leggings with a long shirt – NO “short” SHORTS AT ANY TIME – PLEASE!!! Dresses or skirts/blouses are preferable in the churches.   If you are first off the plane, wait for the remainder of the group.

Please "DO NOT" List

DO NOT drink the water anywhere except what we provide for you.

DO NOT drink anything purchased over ice, only drink what is bought in a bottle.

DO NOT give your address or e-mail address to anyone ....... even if you feel like you know the person.

(If someone wants to write to you, tell them to send it through the mission office).

DO NOT give money to anyone at the airport. We will have someone take care of the luggage. We will give them a tip for the entire group.

DO NOT go anywhere by yourself. If you want to go somewhere, check with us and we will be sure there is someone with you who can translate.

DO NOT leave the mission center at night.

DO NOT throw anything out of the windows of the vehicle while moving. This includes candy while visiting villages. A child may run in front of another vehicle or slip and fall under the one you are in.   Reminder We will change your money when we arrive in Honduras and change it back to dollars the day before we leave.
